Common Ground supportive housing is about getting people housed and keeping them housed.
Tenants enter into 12 month rental agreements and people who have been homeless are offered on-site support services and supported to explore links back into the community and opportunities for employment, education, training and social networks.
It is now two years since Common Ground became home to Jo R, the first tenant to move in to Common Ground. Before she came to live at Common Ground, Jo had been sleeping rough for over 30 years.
As well as Jo, Common Ground is home to over 100 people, including more than 40 tenants who had been chronically homeless, living in a vibrant mixed community of formerly homeless people and low income tenants in need of affordable housing, all living independently in self-contained apartments.
Jo is one member of the Common Ground tenant satchel packing team. The CG tenants (many who have been formerly homeless) offer a satchel packing service to Hobart conference organisers. The initiative has proved to be a winner in so many ways, including contributing to the CG tenant community fund to provide the wherewithal for tenant activities, including 24/7 IT labs, an art studio, and health and wellbeing and cooking programs.
